When American colonists declared independence in 1776, Cherokee leaders faced difficult decisions as they worked to protect their autonomy and ways of life during a time of sweeping change. “Declarations of Sovereignty: The Cherokee Response to Revolution” explores Cherokee participation in the Revolutionary War, the profound changes that followed and the enduring importance of tribal sovereignty.
Through historical interpretation and artwork from the Cherokee National Collection, the exhibit also examines how Cherokee people continue to live today as citizens of both the Cherokee Nation and the United States, serving both nations through voting, military service and civic leadership.
“Declarations of Sovereignty: The Cherokee Response to Revolution” will be on display at the Cherokee National History Museum from June 30, 2026, through May 8, 2027.
